Two very different technologies get marketed under the label 'AI trading'. One organises market information so a human can decide better. The other takes decisions — and your money — out of your hands and trades automatically. Confusing them is expensive.

Australian investors meet both online: research platforms that summarise signals and risk, and 'bots' promising automated profits. The first category is a tool; parts of the second category have attracted regulator warnings worldwide. Knowing the difference is basic self-defence.

AI-assisted research: information, organised

AI-assisted research platforms process market data and present structured summaries: trend states, momentum, sentiment, volatility, risk posture. The human remains the decision-maker — the platform's job ends where your judgement begins.

The practical benefits are coverage and discipline: more instruments watched, the same lens every day, and explicit risk context beside every signal. The costs are also honest: you still do the thinking, and the tool will not promise you outcomes.

Automated trading: execution without you

Automated trading systems place real trades based on rules or models, without human review of each decision. Legitimate versions exist in institutional settings, with dedicated risk teams, capital buffers and constant supervision.

The retail versions promoted on social media are a different story. Promises of automated profit, pressure to deposit with a specific broker, and 'guaranteed' returns are the classic signatures of schemes regulators repeatedly warn about. An algorithm trading your account while you sleep is not a convenience — it is an unbounded risk you cannot supervise.

Why the distinction protects you

With research tools, the worst case is bounded: bad information contributes to a bad decision that you still made, sized and controlled. With automated execution, the worst case is unbounded: a system can compound errors faster than you can intervene, and platforms promising automated profits have every incentive to hide that asymmetry.

The question to ask any 'AI trading' product is simple: can it move my money without me? If yes, everything else about it deserves forensic scrutiny — who holds the funds, what supervision exists, what happens when the model is wrong.

Where FinAI stands

FinAI is deliberately and exclusively a research platform. It does not connect to your brokerage account, does not execute trades and does not promise outcomes. Signals come with reasoning, risk is always visible, and every decision remains yours — made through your own chosen broker, at your own pace.

That design is not a limitation; it is the point. Decision support that keeps the human in control is what AI does well in markets today.

Frequently asked questions

Are trading bots legal in Australia?
Automated trading itself is legal and used by institutions, but many retail 'bot' products promoted online operate outside Australian regulation, and ASIC has repeatedly warned about automated-profit schemes. Extreme caution is warranted with any product that trades your money automatically.
How do I know if a platform executes trades?
Check whether it asks to connect to a brokerage account or hold deposits. A pure research platform needs neither. FinAI, for example, requires no brokerage connection at all.
Is AI-assisted research safer than automated trading?
The risk profile is fundamentally different: research tools inform decisions you still control and size, while automated execution can act faster than you can supervise. No approach removes market risk.
Can FinAI ever place a trade for me?
No. FinAI has no execution capability, no brokerage connections and no access to your funds. It provides general market information and decision support only.

FinAI is an AI-assisted market intelligence platform for Australian investors. It does not provide personal financial advice or execute trades.
